Koroma was educated at the Sierra Leone Church primary School, Boys Government Secondary School in Magburaka and Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, where he graduated from in 1976. After graduating, Koroma taught briefly at the St. Francis Secondary School in Makeni before eventually joining the Sierra Leone National Insurance Company in 1978. From 1978 until the beginning of the political career in 2002, Koroma distinguished himself among in the business community of Sierra Leone.
